Auto Onkel #345 new century cycle tin lithographed wind-up toy, when wound the cycle travels forward or in a circle. This is controled by changing the position of the front wheel and locking it in place with the tiller. While moving, the driver moves his arm up an down while holding his top hat and the man in the back spins his red, white and blue umbrella above their heads. Features all tin construction and hand painted figures.
There are several versions of this toy made between 1896 and 1938 differentiated by the color scheme and umbrella design.
The ultra earliest and rarest version have car, driver and passenger are identical to the early ?birds and flowers? version of the New Century Cycle. The company logo prominent on this toy dates back to 1896. The umbrella is quite distinctive and has an orange German Iron Cross pattern.
This is the ultra-scarce earliest version, believed to have been made in 1894. This has a crank drive, and the umbrella and top cap are adorned with colorful birds, flowers and butterflies.
The ultra earliest and rarest version have car, driver and passenger are identical to the early ?birds and flowers? version of the New Century Cycle. The company logo prominent on this toy dates back to 1896. The umbrella is quite distinctive and has an orange German Iron Cross pattern.
This one is very rare as it has a one piece arm and flag pole crudely made, but it passes the blacklight test and is truly a Lehmann design, undoubtedly a later production for the US market. The umbrella design is unique to this version of the toy also and is unlike the others as it says ?Lehmann 345? on the umbrella, unlike any of the others.
Version with a blue circle in the center of the umbrella with alternating white and red stripes.
This toy has a ring of stars with alternating red and white stripes and no lettering on the umbrella.
